The Object Sphinx Set draws inspiration from an Archaic Greek marble sphinx (ca. 580–575 BCE) in The Metropolitan Museum of Art's collection. Reimagined in hand-carved white marble, the pair pays homage to the sculptural forms of early Greek monuments while celebrating the beauty of natural stone. The original marble sculpture, once topped the tall grave shaft of a young man named Philinos, and belongs to the earliest type of grave stele produced in Attica during the 6th century B.C. In the early Archaic period, Greek sculptors took design cues from the Egyptians for large-scale monuments. This example has a four-sided structure with flat, stylized features.
