Inspired by the fan motifs depicted on a box from Japan’s Edo period (1615–1868), the Cabinet Kumo pays tribute to the art of makie: a technique using gold and silver powder on wet lacquer, sometimes accompanied by mother-of-pearl inlay, as exemplified by the Met Museum’s object. The box, now in The Met collection, is a delicate expression of refined Japanese artistry, echoed here in a modern interpretation.
