CELEBRATING MODERN CRAFTSMANSHIP AND ESTEEMED HERITAGE WITH JAIPUR RUGS ABOUT JAIPUR RUGS

ABOUT JAIPUR RUGS
Built on the fundamental principle of conserving ancestral knowledge and connecting rural craftsmanship with global consumers, Jaipur Rugs was established as a revolutionary rug company in the carpet industry by NK Chaudhary in 1978.
Founded in 1978 by Nand Kishore Chaudhary, Jaipur Rugs was established as a revolutionary rug company in the carpet industry – creating an entirely new business model – one which worked directly with artisans empowering them and their communities with a sustainable livelihood. NK Chaudhary founded the initiative working beside 9 artisans on 2 looms. A trademark of quality and design renowned across the world, Jaipur Rugs brings together a 2500-year old weaving tradition with state-of-the-art attention to sustainability and design. With its headquarters based in Jaipur, Jaipur Rugs works with a network of 40,000 weavers in 6 states across India, binding them with the common thread of love and compassion.

The brand’s philosophy is to use the age-old craft of carpet making as a tool to bring prosperity into the homes of 40,000 rural artisans of which 80% are women.
The unique combination of the brand’s core values, unrivalled design, and expert craftsmanship provides this family-owned business an enduring source of advantage. Artisans are not only provided sustainable livelihoods, but also opportunities for personal growth and development. Various projects and programmes are organized frequently to ensure societal impact through this change.

In the early 1990’s Nand Kishore Chaudhary took a leap of faith – moving from Rajasthan to Gujarat to bring his creative potential to the world. Over the years, he set up Jaipur Rugs as a business entity and was able to skill train and bring empowerment to the largest group of skilled artisans in the tribal belts of Gujarat.

In the 16th century, artisans working in Jaipur adopted the Persian weaving techniques and reinterpreted them according to their own creativity. A unique style of carpet weaving was born. Today, the brand follows the same procedure in making their unique pieces.

1. CARDING AND SPINNING
The brand’s carefully selected wool becomes yarn in the hands of the Katwaris, artisans that layer its strands together, remove dirt and knots, and finally channel centuries of Indian tradition on a charkha, the spinning wheel.
2. DYEING
Yarn is wound on a wheel-like frame, dipped and kept into boiling hot vats of dye to embed its intended colour, then hung to dry in the sun.
3. WEAVING
Following an age-old tradition coming from Persia, weavers sit down at the loom and spend up to one year hand knotting their patterns, line after line, with meticulous attention to detail.
4. WASHING
Artisans methodically pour water and a mild cleansing solution to pull out the dirt that each carpet has attracted. Each stroke flushes out what is unnecessary, increasing the strength of each underlying knot.

The key pieces in the brand’s collections are the hand knotted rugs. If you turn one upside down, you will notice countless tiny knots looking like pixels in a photograph. The more knots you see fitting in a square inch, the longer the duration was for the artisan to hand-weave the rug.
Gultarash is a specific technique that translates to “finding the flower” since it was originally used to create a high-low effect that made the flowers pop. Today, it is used to highlight mtifs and patterns, thereby creating a textural effect that is unsurpassed.
