MIND OVER MATTER WITH NAMIT KHANNA

As the world continues to evolve, so must the designs that contribute to it. Design must be capable of borrowing from, and providing to the environment. Indian designer Namit Khanna is a prime example of this - pulling inspiration from the natural world and designing pieces that reflect human needs.

Best known for his playful approach to design, product designer and founder of Nama Home, Namit Khanna has established himself as one of the most eccentric product designers of the country. Mastering the art of working with materials and emphasizing texture, Namit designs conversation starters with a minimal approach and an exhaustive attention to detail.

Running around manufacturing units ever since he was a child, being a third generation entrepreneur, he always possessed a passion for imagining and crafting unique objects using contemporary techniques. He completed his Masters in Product Design from Milan under the guidance of Valerio Sommella. An awardee of Elle Décor India’s Young Talent 2021 and Dwell’s 24 Best Designers around the World 2022, the designer discusses his stamp of success, his design inspirations, and his latest collection, exclusively in a chat with The House Of Things.

Q & A
THOT: Please describe your own interior aesthetic in 3 words.
NK: Raw, Minimal, and Frugally innovative.
THOT: Which designers have influenced you throughout your career?
NK: Tom Dixon, Valerio Sommella, Campana Brothers, Oki Sato, Nika Zupanc, Dieter Rams
THOT: How important is memory in your work?
NK: My goal is to always create an impact such that if you see my product once, you should never be able to forget it. Basically 10,000 TB memory.
THOT: The geometric simplicity of your designs is very reminiscent of the Art Deco and Bauhaus movements. What is your greatest design inspiration?
NK: I really am not inspired by these design movements. I base my designs purely on my observations wherein I try to mix minimalism with playfulness.
THOT: What is the one thing you love in your house not designed by you?
NK: Everything because nothing is designed by me.
THOT: How do you think the design industry is responding to taking environmental and social responsibility?
NK: There are some people that are genuinely incorporating environmental measures while designing products which is amazing but that’s still on a tiny level in India. Regarding social responsibility, lot of brands are empowering their makers which is really good to see as they are the ones who make us.
THOT: What is your most favourite piece from your collections?
NK: It’s like picking your most favourite child, but I have one - the Starfish Lounger coming in December 2023!
