Mumbai-based interior designer Ashiesh Shah is known for his wabi-sabi aesthetic – witness the exquisite Joshi House in Mumbai, the atmospheric environs of the clothing store, Raw Mango in Colaba, Mumbai, or the other exceptional spaces he has fashioned. Lauded for bringing in a liveable luxury to all his spaces, Shah has created the interiors of the Lake House, Udaipur, in collaboration with architect Verendra Wakhloo to bring about a synergist progeny of storied charm and modern sensibilities.

A modernist monolith, perched 9 metres above the main road, the Lake House offers picturesque vistas of the Fateh Sagar Lake, and the enveloping Aravali Range of the region, spread over an area of 12,000 sq. ft. of three interlinked blocks. Flanked by a gargantuan colonnaded façade and columns in precast white concrete, the pared-down and vertical silhouette of the home is emphasized by seamless white marble floors and walls clad in white American oak.

A combination of open and enclosed spaces and a series of vanishing thresholds beckons the Great Outdoors placidly. Each detail has been carefully wrought – building a journey through the home. In the entryway, a sleek marble console opens up to the light-filled home; on the opposite side, the marble staircase yearning to be admired. Classic artefacts ranging from a terracotta amphora and a welcoming Garuda sculpture ground the home in family values.

The interior spaces within the five-bedroom home pay homage to its surrounding landscape and family values.

Mindful of the three generations that live therein, the home supports a puja room, an 80-foot long entertainment area comprising of seating, bar, and library sections, a formal dining room, and bedrooms with private terraces overlooking the scenic landscape. Compliant of the local ecology and surrounding nature, the home is suffused with a delicate abstraction of recurring leitmotifs seen in Rajput-Mughal style architecture – the jharokas, the fluted columns, the chhatris, and the curved arches.

Flanked by a series of floor-to-ceiling windows, the expansive home exudes a wabi-sabi-esque calmness through its tactility and spectacular views of the lake and hills.

An impressive entryway paves the way into the light-filled home, where a custom-made marble console adorns the corridor with an ornate mirror placed above. Juxtaposed with the negative space that carries the hallmark of Ashiesh Shah’s signature style, the anteroom leads into the living area, where sheer curtains proffer a certain amount of fluidity to the neutral-toned space.

Shah’s interiors work in tandem with architect Verendra Wakhloo’s design – modern in the choice of materials, finishes, and accessories.

L-R: A rustic charpoy forms the lounging accent on this first floor terrace between bedrooms. A quaint seating area in a bedroom comprised of 2 armchairs and a pink onyx side table.

The breezy yet striking, art-infused space is vastly enhanced through a careful selection of art – whether a pichwai painting adorning the walls of the master bedroom, or a collection of antique sculptures dating back from the late 1850’s – 1900’s scattered throughout the space. Embellished with works by artists Surendra Nair, Kim Seola, and other antique figurines sourced from Kerala, the home also boasts pragmatic artisanship seen in elements such as the marble staircase with its bronze handrail and inlay details.

“While the house has a personality of its own, the interior environment is vastly enhanced through a careful selection and presentation of art”, says Shah.

The devil is all in the details. At one end of the living space, Gunjan Gupta’s Bori Sofa makes a case for a seamless marriage of form and function overlooking a panoramic landscape of the home’s perfect outdoor terraced gardens and the lake. A contemporary lighting fixture comprising of bronze-finished cloud-like shapes floats above. The powder room features a monumental 10-foot tall wash basin hewn skilfully from a singular block of granite from one of the marble units situated in the region. A ceiling-mounted looking glass by Shailesh Rajput Studio floats above the basin in a playful symmetry.

Unapologetically majestic yet immensely characterized by its surrounding natural beauty and functionality, the Lake House embraces luxury ensconced in a feeling of calm – an ideal oasis that forges a personal connection between the designer and client, adding warmth and depth to the cavernous home. A perfect l' équilibre between embellishment, restraint, and design, this AD100 award-winning home has conceived a design renaissance in a tier-three town like Udaipur.
